For the most accurate results, perform this calculation over several full tanks of gas and average the final numbers to account for different driving conditions.
How to use
- 1
Fill up your gas tank completely and reset your trip odometer to zero.
- 2
Drive normally until you need to refuel.
- 3
Fill up the tank again. Enter the 'Distance Traveled' from your trip odometer.
- 4
Enter the 'Fuel Used', which is the exact amount of fuel you just put into the car.
- 5
Review the result to see your actual real-world fuel efficiency (L/100km or MPG).

Frequently asked questions
Why is my calculated fuel consumption different from the dashboard display?
Vehicle computers estimate fuel consumption based on algorithmic averages, which can sometimes be overly optimistic. A manual calculation using your odometer and fuel pump receipt is the most accurate method.
What is considered good fuel efficiency?
This depends entirely on the vehicle type. A compact hybrid might achieve 4 L/100km (60 MPG), while a large SUV or truck might average 15 L/100km (15 MPG). Compare your result with the manufacturer's stated specifications.
Why is my car suddenly consuming more fuel?
A sudden drop in fuel efficiency can be caused by under-inflated tires, dirty air filters, worn spark plugs, or faulty oxygen sensors. It is a good indicator that your car may need maintenance.
